London Festival of Architecture - Save the date
In 2013 LFA will become an annual, month-long and citywide exploration of London’s built environment; investigating the importance of architecture and design in London’s success and celebrating the city’s role as a global hub of architectural experimentation, thinking, learning and practice.
Many festivals celebrate history, cultural activities and human achievements. The London Festival of Architecture, established in 2004, does all this but also actively promotes positive change and improvement in the city’s public realm.
Taking place 1-30 June 2013, LFA will be a ‘time for architecture’ in the city and will incorporate a programme by invited Festival Partners from leading architectural and cultural institutions in order to harness and to link the enormous energy inherent in the London scene.
A rich and varied programme organised by independent actors, such as individual practices and artists will be promoted as the London Festival of Architecture Fringe.

Sky Art: Thomas Lamadieu illustrates in the sky between buildings
For anyone who has lived or visited a narrow courtyard wrapped in
buildings it can sometimes be a claustrophobic space with the sky
limited in all directions, but the strange geometric gaps formed by the
surrounding architecture are often fun to photograph. For instance art
director Lisa Rienermann
became famous for her award-winning alphabet formed from
letters spotted in the space between buildings. However French artist Thomas Lamadieu instead used the constraints as inspiration for his imaginative illustration series Sky Art,
where the artist drew within the narrow confines of rooftops and tiny
slices of sky to create some pretty wild imagery. It would be fun to see
different artists interpretations of the exact same spot.

Fonts & Dogs
Created by Vienna-based studio grafisches büro is a series of images that playfully interpret which dogs could be related to which typeface - a
dalmation as courier, or perhaps a german shepherd as helvetica. The work observes each pet for their various characteristics in the same capacity as comparing fonts - finding the similarities in that of nature and that of a typographer's design.

Umbrella art installation
1. Umbrella house in Houston
Image: photine
The "Parasol Project" by Jo Ann Fleischhauer is a spectacular installation with a deeper meaning: the artist chose to contrast how emotions are portrayed in modern times versus the Victorian Era. The images on the parasols, which mimic floral designs, are actually colour-infused Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs) - contemporary emotional representations - while the parasols themselves represent the desires of women in Victorian times, who used parasols to convey unspoken emotions to men.

4. Umbrella installation in Melbourne mall

Colourful umbrellas make us smile, but these black umbrellas sure do pack a punch, especially when they're contrasted with the whiteness of the surrounding space; viewed from below, it's almost like a huge flock of black umbrella-shaped birds is flying overhead. A bit creepy.

8. Beach umbrellas in Gorman, California

This umbrella installation by Christo and Jean-Claude, which finally came to fruition in 1991, was an international affair, with 1,760 yellow umbrellas set up in Gorman, California and 1,340 blue umbrellas erected in Ibaraki, Japan. The total project cost was $26 million, and it attracted 3 million people from around the world.

Certainly not as ambitious as the Christo project, Channel 4 in London still managed to turn a few heads with their "raining umbrellas" and their number 4 umbrella.

"Cumulus Light Canopy" by Steven Haulenbeek uses white photographers’ translucent “shoot-through” umbrellas to create variously sized configurations of umbrella lighting. They look just like the beautiful, fluffy clouds they're named after.

Twins: Houses in Five Parts
Boston based practice William O’Brien jr. has designed 'Twins: houses in five parts', two single family residences located in upstate New York, USA. intended for two brothers, a pair of structures sharing similar geometric qualities are linked by a functional agricultural field. The internal volumes are the result of a study of the mathematical principle of 'dissection' in which polygons of equal areas may be divided into identical shapes. Two sets composed of four varied trapezoids and one triangle containing parallel programmatic functions are arranged into a square and hexagonal plan configuration.
two homes separated by a linear agricultural plot
The floor and roof planes respond to immediate topographical shifts creating a varied sectional alignment connected with ramps and stairs. all water runoff is directed towards a linear plot which can be easily accessed by dwellers from both endpoints. The ribbon of land is planted with interwoven strips of berries, vegetables and wheat. Continuous horizontal windows provide vistas of the surrounding forest and familial neighbor. Visible exterior surfaces are coated with thick black stucco contrasting the monochromatic white interior.
